Gardening in the Valley of Heart's Delight
How this page came to be
figs on tree The idea of doing this web page began one day when I noticed these figs starting to develop. I had never seen figs on the tree before I moved to California. "These are so cool!" I said to myself. "I should take a picture to send to my friends and family back in Minnesota. Or better yet, publish it on the web, for anyone interested to see." And so I have.

See how the figs are sticking up from the branch, not hanging down? As they ripen, they get softer and gradually the neck bends so that the body of the fig hangs down. And that's why, when you buy dried figs, their stems are always bent down against the flesh. Now you know.

Speaking of figs, here's a new fig I've planted. Looks like a stick, doesn't it? Yup, that's all it is. It goes by the name "Tony's Santa Barbara Fig," because Tony begged a cutting off some people down in Santa Barbara years ago. A charming Italian gentleman in his sixties, Tony is a member of the California Rare Fruit Growers, Santa Clara chapter, which I've recently joined. "You like figs?" he asked. "Take this home, stick it in the ground, it'll grow huge yellow figs as big as your fist." And so I have. If it sprouts, I'll update this picture. And if it bears fruit, you're sure to see a picture of that! fig stick
