Although the Corflu program is nowhere near being set in stone, we have been considering a number of ideas. Possible program items include:
Talk About Music and Fandom
Music and zines. Science fiction and music. What kinds of music have fans been interested in? What are the differences between music fans and fannish fans who love music? How have music zines and SF fanzines influenced each other? What did Phil Dick listen to? What was so cool about West Coast jazz?
Corflu With An Attitude
Talk about Attitude the Fanzine and Attitude the Convention. Did it all work out as planned? How did Attitude differ from Corflu, and how might Attitude's philosophy influence a potential British Corflu of the future?
Remembering Redd Boggs, Charles Burbee, and Bob Shaw
A memorial to three great fanwriters who passed away in the past year. How did their writing affect us? Readings and reminiscences.
The FAAn Awards Nominees
Who was nominated for this year's FAAn awards? Discussion and reading of some examples that show why they got nominated. Who got passed over this time? Who deserves to be considered for next year?
A Corflu Retrospective
On the occasion of the first Bay Area Corflu since 1985, a discussion of the origins of Corflu and Bay Area fandom of the time. Who attended the first two Corflus? How has Corflu changed in the years leading up to the present day?
Fannotchka, A Play by Andrew P. Hooper
Fannotchka tells the story of a romance between fans from different worlds -- one a fanzine publisher and the other a convention runner. It's also a frank pastiche of Ernst Lubitsch's 1939 film Ninotchka, which starred Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. The play premiered to general acclaim at LACon III, and Corflu Wave will see its second performance.
This Corflu tradition takes on an even greater importance this year. Any and all donations to benefit a variety of fannish charities such as TAFF (Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund), DUFF (Down Under Fan Fund), or Corflu will be gratefully accepted! If you can't attend Corflu, contact firstname.lastname@example.org to make arrangements for mailing items. Whether you're mailing donations or bringing them with you, contact me (see info below) in advance so I know what to expect. Thanks!
If you have any ideas, suggestions, or other feedback, please feel free to contact me.
